Strong Start – Looking for a short, meaningful, volunteer opportunity here at Sandowne P.S?   Become a Strong Start Coach!

Strong Start’s Letters, Sounds and Words is “a reading skills program designed to be implemented by volunteers who do not need to have related experience” (Strongstart.ca).  Trained Coaches work one on one with students in Senior Kindergarten and Grade One for a period of  ten weeks.  The programme uses short games and fun activities to provide repetition to help children recognize letters and their corresponding sounds.  Coaches work with each child for thirty minutes per week, following detailed activities using materials provided. After training, it’s a one hour per week, for a ~ten week period, commitment that really makes a difference.

We would like to continue to offer this great opportunity to Sandowne students.  We need more coaches and we’d like you to join us!

Training for coaches is provided by Strong Start.  Coaches must attend two short (two hour) training sessions before volunteering at their schools.  For more information and to sign up for training, please visit Strongstart.ca  or call Laura Hagey-Nichols at the school (519 884-4800).

Walking Club – Thanks to Mme Teal-Breeze for coordinating a Walking Club for students!  This club will walk the perimeter of the field at 2nd Nutrition Break on Days 2, 3 and 5 for fun and fitness.  We will start on Thursday, October 22nd!
